About

CHAMP-ION (Championing European Ion-Trap Quantum Technologies) is a European initiative establishing the first open-access High-Quality Pilot Line (HQ-PL) for ion-trap quantum chips (ITCs). As one of six quantum pilot lines funded under the European Chips Act and the Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU), the project is creating the manufacturing capabilities needed to bring ion-trap quantum technologies from the laboratory to industry.
By developing high-quality fabrication processes, standardized Process Design Kits (PDKs), and advanced chip integration technologies, CHAMP-ION will enable the production of next-generation ion-trap chips at industrial quality and scale. Through open access to its pilot line, the project will support researchers, startups, SMEs, and industry in accelerating innovation and developing quantum technologies for computing, communication, sensing, and beyond.

Industrialisation Roadmap

CHAMP-ION will offer a  catalogue of ion‑trap services across the full value chain: the expected services to be offered are Standardized Traps (based on monolithic PDK, stacked PDK as well as SLE- and MEMS-based standard traps), Customized Traps (based on unique requests) and Specialized Business and Technical Support Services. Initial access to CHAMP-ION services is planned for early 2028, with standardized service packages expected to follow after.
